Producing Your Own Play

ON WRITING & DIRECTING - by G.L. Horton

EVERYBODY is interested in grants-- but don't waste your precious energy looking. Grants to individual artists are rare and very competitive.

You can do it on your own. If you have business skills and friends to help you, you might not even lose much money. (You certainly won't MAKE any, which is why it is futile to look for "investors".) If you produce, do consider asking someone whose work you admire to direct. They may very well be willing to do it for free, or for a share of the (highly unlikely) profits.

Producing is a hellish job. The hardest part is getting the PR out there--- which is almost impossible to do well and direct at the same time. There are only 24 hours in a day, and everything is going wrong at once! Directing a new play is very difficult, but exciting and worthwhile -- and may even look impressive on a resume, if you should get good reviews --- b/c people KNOW it is difficult, and award extra credit.
